SKF Z series sealing washers

An SKF sealing washer is a thin disc fitted beside a bearing to close off the space between shaft and housing. Unlike a shaft seal it doesn't rub: it leaves a very narrow gap that slows grease loss and keeps out coarse dirt. It is a simple, compact way to protect grease-lubricated supports that have no room for a more complex seal.

The number points to the bearing

Each designation begins with Z followed by a number tied to the size of the matching bearing: Z 007 and Z 008 are consecutive sizes. The number is not a millimeter dimension, so select the washer from the bearing designation rather than by measuring the shaft.

A letter after the number marks the execution. Z 008 F and Z 010 F are the version with a felt element added to the disc for a tighter closure. The plain version and the F version of one number sit in the same mounting position but are different part numbers.

How it works and where it mounts

The washer is clamped against one bearing ring and leaves a narrow gap at the other. Depending on the arrangement, the inner ring holds it, through the nut or the shaft shoulder, or the outer ring does, through the housing cover. Fitting more than one washer, facing each other to build a small labyrinth, is common practice.

With no contact it adds no friction and doesn't wear, but it also won't hold oil or stand up to water jets. In an environment with liquids or very fine dust you need a contact seal too. When you take the assembly apart, check the washers for distortion: a bent washer rubs and runs hot.

What we need for a quote

Send the washer designation and the quantity. If you don't have it, give us the designation of the bearing it sits next to, how many washers there were and on which side. Tell us whether the ones you removed had felt. That pins down size and execution. If the support is losing grease, describe the environment, since a different seal type may be the better choice.

Does the number give the shaft diameter?

No. It relates to the bearing size, so choose it from the bearing designation.

Can it take the place of a shaft seal?

It won't hold oil. It works for grease and coarse dirt, or alongside a seal.

What does the F mean?

It is the felt element version, a separate part number in the same size.

Key series

SKF Z Series Sealing Washers

SKF Z series sealing washers are axial seals used in rotating equipment to hold lubricant in and keep contaminants out. They appear in gearboxes, pumps, electric motors and transmission assemblies, protecting bearings and wear surfaces. MR Industrial Accessories LLC supplies this line and can help you match the washer to your housing and shaft.

SKF Z F Series Sealing Washers

Sealing washers in the SKF Z F series work as axial seals, fitted either on a shaft or into a housing to hold lubricant in place and keep contaminants out. They are produced from elastomers that stand up to oils and greases, and they suit assemblies where space along the axis is tight.
