Inch adapter sleeves

An inch adapter sleeve lets you fit a tapered bore bearing onto a plain cylindrical shaft sized in inches, which is standard on North American equipment and on much imported machinery. The sleeve has a tapered outside, a straight bore and a slot that lets it clamp down on the shaft. Tightening the nut drives the bearing up the taper and locks it in place, with no shaft shoulder or keyway needed.

SKF SNW part numbers carry two values separated by an X: a size number, then the shaft diameter in inches. SNW 10X1.11/16 fits a 1 11/16 inch shaft and SNW 13X2.3/16 a 2 3/16 inch shaft. The first number is a size code tied to the bearing, not the shaft diameter. BGL offers the HA series, with part numbers such as HA2340 and HA2344 built on the same series-and-size logic.

Selection rests on three things: the shaft diameter in inches, the bearing designation, and the matching nut and lock washer. The sleeve has to suit the bearing series, since taper and thread size vary from one series to another. Do not swap an inch sleeve for a metric one of about the same size: shaft and bore will not match and the fit will not hold.
