SKF SNW inch adapter sleeves

SKF SNW sleeves are adapter assemblies for inch shafts: a tapered sleeve, a lock nut and a lock washer that hold a tapered bore bearing on a plain shaft. They do the same job as the metric H series adapter sleeves, but with inch threads and dimensions. They are the right choice for machinery of North American origin and for SAF series housings.

Size and shaft, both in the code

SNW 10X1.11/16 carries two pieces of information. The number after the letters relates to the bearing the sleeve takes, and what follows the X is the shaft diameter, with the whole inch and the fraction separated by a point. That makes SNW 13X2.3/16 and SNW 15X2.7/16 two different sizes, each for its own shaft.

One bearing size can have sleeves for more than one shaft, so the size number alone falls short. The shaft is given as a fraction, not a decimal; copy the designation exactly as shown, point and slash included. Any extra letters on the removed sleeve also belong to the part number.

It all comes down to the shaft

With this sleeve, the real shaft diameter decides everything. An inch shaft worn by a few thousandths will no longer let the sleeve seat properly, and a metric shaft of similar size will not work either: the gap between neighboring inch and metric sizes is more than the sleeve can take up. Measure with a micrometer at several points.

Installation follows the usual adapter sleeve method: tightening the nut pushes the bearing up the taper until it reaches its fit, checked by clearance reduction or tightening angle. The nut and washer in the assembly have inch threads, so if you replace them separately, order them from the matching series.

Quote details

Send the full designation and the quantity. If you do not have it, give us the bearing designation, which has to be a tapered bore bearing, and the shaft diameter in inches with its fraction. Say whether you need the complete assembly or one of its parts, and which housing it goes in. With that we can confirm both size and shaft.

Can an SNW sleeve replace a metric H sleeve?

No. One is for inch shafts and the other for metric shafts, and they do not interchange.

What is the number after the X?

The shaft diameter in inches, written as a whole number and a fraction separated by a point.

Are the nut and washer included?

Yes. The assembly is the sleeve, the lock nut and the lock washer.
