SKF adapter sleeves in the H, HA and HE series

An SKF adapter sleeve lets you fit a tapered bore bearing on a plain shaft that has no shoulder or key. It is a slotted, tapered sleeve that comes with a lock nut and a lock washer. The H, HA and HE series fit different shafts for the same bearing sizes, so the number on its own will not get you the right sleeve.

Reading the digits and the prefix

In H 205, the digits point to the bearing size the sleeve takes: a 205 sleeve matches tapered bore bearings of that size, and it is not a shaft dimension. The H series is for metric shafts. HA 209 and HE 213 are series for inch shafts; the bearing can be the same one the H series mounts, but the sleeve bore differs.

In H 311 E, the trailing E marks a variant of the same size, and other letters can do the same. Copy the full designation from the sleeve you removed. If you only have the bearing designation, check that it ends in K, which means it has the tapered bore a sleeve needs.

How it mounts on the shaft

The sleeve holds the shaft by wedging: tightening the nut pushes the bearing up the taper and locks everything in place. The shaft has to be the right size and clean; wear or burrs keep the sleeve from seating along its full length. You control the fit by the reduction in bearing clearance or by the tightening angle the manufacturer gives, not by how hard you pull on the wrench.

Don't confuse an adapter sleeve with a withdrawal sleeve. A withdrawal sleeve goes in from the opposite side and needs an abutment on the shaft, and it has its own line in the catalog. Lock nuts and lock washers can be ordered on their own when only one of them is damaged.

Getting a sleeve quoted

Give us the full designation, the quantity and the real shaft diameter taken with a caliper or micrometer. Without the sleeve designation, send the designation of the bearing on it and the shaft diameter, in millimeters or inches; those two facts point to the series. Tell us whether you want the complete set or just the nut and washer. If it sits in a split pillow block housing, the housing designation helps confirm the assembly.

Will an H 205 fit a 25 mm shaft?

Don't read that from the number, because 205 refers to the bearing size. Measure the shaft or check the manufacturer's catalog.

Are HA and HE just H sleeves?

They take the same bearing sizes but fit different shafts. Check the shaft before swapping one for another.

Are the nut and washer included?

Yes, an adapter sleeve comes with both. Each can also be ordered separately by its own designation.

Key series

SKF H Series Adapter Sleeves

When a bearing with a tapered bore needs to sit on a plain shaft that has no machined shoulder, an adapter sleeve does the job. It slides along the shaft to the working position and is locked in place with a nut, so the bearing can be set exactly where it is needed. SKF H series sleeves cover this mounting method for 22 series spherical roller bearings and self-aligning ball bearings.

SKF HE Series Adapter Sleeve

The SKF HE series adapter sleeve allows a bearing with a tapered bore to be fitted onto a cylindrical shaft. The assembly includes an externally threaded sleeve plus a lock nut and lock washer; tightening the nut produces the interference that holds the bearing in place. Typical uses include gearboxes, pumps, fans and conveyors, where a secure connection that can still be removed is needed.

SKF Adapter Sleeve HA Series

The SKF HA series adapter sleeve is a mounting assembly that secures a tapered-bore bearing onto a cylindrical shaft. It includes a split sleeve, a lock nut, and a lock washer. This design allows precise positioning and straightforward removal, making it a practical choice for power transmission equipment, gearboxes, and other industrial machinery where the bearing's axial location must be set or the assembly needs to be taken apart without damaging the shaft.
