SKF V-ring seals: profiles, sizes and part numbers

An SKF V-ring is a rubber ring stretched over the shaft so that it turns with it. Its lip presses axially against a face square to the shaft, such as the side of a housing or a cover, working both as a seal and as a flinger. You can use it by itself or ahead of a radial shaft seal to keep dust and splash away from the main lip.

Reading profile, size and material

In 20 VA R, the number is the ring size, which covers a range of shaft diameters, and VA is the profile. The last letter tells you the material, so 16 VA V is the same profile in a different compound. 8 VS R and 140 VL R are other profiles whose cross-sections suit other spaces or operating conditions.

Since the ring is stretched on installation, the number in the part number may not equal the shaft diameter. Some part numbers are purely numeric, like 400050, and reveal neither profile nor size. For those, copy the full number and confirm the dimensions separately.

The counterface matters

Because a V-ring seals axially, the face its lip runs against is as important as the shaft. That face has to be smooth, square to the shaft and at the correct distance: too far and the lip never makes contact, too close and it presses too hard and wears. When you measure, record the width from the back of the ring to the counterface.

At high speed, centrifugal force tends to lift the ring, and it may need a support to hold it in place. Since it sits on the outside, its material also has to stand up to whatever is around it, such as grease, water, heat or cleaning chemicals. If the old ring hardened or cracked, that points to the compound and is worth telling us.

What we need to quote a V-ring

Send the full part number and the quantity. Without one, give us the shaft diameter where the ring sits, the free width and a side-view photo of the seal so we can recognize the cross-section. Include the operating temperature, the approximate speed and what the outside of the seal is exposed to. If the V-ring runs next to a shaft seal, add that seal's part number too, since the two are selected together.

Does the number equal the shaft diameter?

No, it is a size that spans a range of shafts. Confirm the diameter before you choose.

Can VA and VS be swapped?

They are profiles with different cross-sections. The answer depends on the space available and the counterface.

Can a V-ring replace a radial shaft seal?

No. It does not hold back oil under pressure; it seals axially and usually works alongside the shaft seal.

Key series

SKF V-ring Seals 400050, 400060, 400124

A V-ring seal is a rotary sealing element that fits on the shaft. Its ring-shaped body carries a V-profile lip that turns with the shaft, holding lubricant in and keeping dust, water and particles out. You will find these seals in bearing housings, electric motors, pumps, gearboxes and other rotating equipment where a straightforward barrier is enough. MR Industrial Accessories supplies the SKF line to customers throughout the United States and in several Latin American countries.

SKF VA R V-Ring Seals 14–35 mm

For maintenance teams dealing with dust, splash or process debris, the SKF VA R series V-ring is a straightforward axial seal. It fits directly on the shaft and its elastomer lip presses against a perpendicular face, so it deflects contaminants and helps hold lubricant in place. MR supplies this series in shaft sizes from 14 mm to 35 mm.

SKF VA V Series V-Ring Seals

A V-ring seal from the SKF VA V series is an axial sealing component that fits onto the shaft and turns with it. Its elastomer lip presses against a perpendicular face, often a bearing front or flange, and keeps out dust, water and particles. This makes it a practical dynamic barrier for pumps, gearboxes and electric motors. MR Industrial Accessories supplies this series through its industrial seals range.
