SKF CARB toroidal roller bearings

A CARB bearing is a radial bearing with toroidal rollers. It does two jobs that normally need two different bearings: it accepts angular misalignment between shaft and housing, and it lets the shaft move axially inside the bearing without loading the assembly. That makes it the usual choice for the non-locating (floating) position at the end of a shaft that grows with heat, on long shafts, and on supports that are not perfectly aligned.

Read the part number piece by piece. In C 2206 TN9, C marks the CARB series, 22 is the dimension series and 06 is the size code; multiply it by 5 and you get a 30 mm bore. TN9 means a polyamide cage. C3, as in C 2206 TN9/C3, means radial internal clearance larger than normal, and V, as in C 2206 V, means a full complement design with no cage. C 2208 TN9 is an example of a larger size.

You will find them in paper and pulp machines, industrial fans, belt conveyors, gearboxes, mills and drives, where a deep groove ball bearing could not live with the misalignment and a spherical roller bearing could not absorb the thermal growth. To specify one, set it as the non-locating bearing, choose the radial internal clearance to suit the fit and the temperature, and confirm the minimum radial load so the rollers do not skid.
