SKF radial shaft seals: sizes, designs and part numbers

An SKF radial shaft seal sits where a rotating shaft exits its housing, holding lubricant in and keeping dust and water out. SKF uses two styles of part number for these oil seals. One spells out the dimensions and then the design; the other is a plain number with no size information. Figure out which kind you have and the rest of the search falls into place.

Reading size, design and lip variant

Take 6X16X5 HMSA10 RG: the first three figures are shaft diameter, housing bore and seal width, in millimeters. HMSA10 is the design, and the closing letters identify the lip variant. 8X22X7 HMSA10 V and 8X22X7 HMS5 RG have identical dimensions but are different seals: one changes the lip variant, the other changes the design.

12X22X7 CRW1 R comes from a different design family with its own ending. 1850 is a number-only part number, so its size cannot be read from it. If the old seal still carries a marking, write it down completely, spaces and letters included, before you start measuring.

Check the shaft position, not just the machine

You select a seal for the shaft position it seals. The key points are which way the lip faces, what sits on each side (oil, grease, water or dust) and the temperature and speed right there. Two identical gearboxes can use one seal at the input and another at the output. If the outside is dusty, see whether the old seal had a second lip; you lose that design detail when you pass along only the dimensions.

Inspect the shaft surface before installing the new seal. If the old lip wore a groove into it, a fresh seal will start leaking soon. Then the order grows: along with the seal you may need a wear sleeve, which SKF lists as a separate line.

What we need to quote

The fastest way is the full part number and quantity. If you don't have it, measure the shaft and the housing with a caliper (not the distorted seal) to get the three dimensions, and send a photo of each face. Tell us the fluid being retained, whether dust or water is present, the approximate operating temperature and whether the shaft turns in one direction only. Naming the machine and the position, such as input, output or wheel, keeps us from mixing up two similar seals on the same equipment.

If two seals have the same dimensions, can I swap them?

Not necessarily. The design and the closing letters belong to the part number too.

What if the part number is only a number?

Look it up exactly as written or send it to us. The size cannot be worked out from it.

Should I measure the old seal?

Use it only as a rough guide, since the lip and body deform in service. Measure the shaft and the housing instead.
