SKF tapered roller bearings: part numbers and mounting

To identify an SKF tapered roller bearing you need two things: the part number and the way the bearing is arranged in the machine. SKF's guide presents this design for combined loads and points out that it usually runs in pairs. Cylindrical and spherical roller bearings sit in the same catalog, but having rollers in common does not make the three lines interchangeable in one housing. How the original was assembled belongs in your request.

Reading numbers, slashes and suffix blocks

30202 is a plain numeric designation from the 302 series. 32008 X/VA983 starts with a number from a different series and carries an extra block after it; that block has to stay when you copy the part number. Both full part numbers are listed in our catalog, and a search by bearing type and diameter is no substitute for them.

Part numbers such as 687/672 and 938/932 are made of two groups joined by a slash. Write both groups exactly as they appear, and note the markings on each component of the bearing you removed. Never build a new pairing from the first half of one part number and the second half of another. If the assembly comes apart, keep each photo and marking tied to its component so parts from different bearing positions do not get mixed up in the request.

Where the pair sits and how it is arranged

Our SKF guide links roller bearings to gearboxes and power transmission equipment. For a tapered bearing position inside a gearbox, tell us which shaft it is on and where it appears on the parts drawing. If a second bearing completes the arrangement, write down its part number and which way it faces before you take the components apart.

How a bearing position behaves depends on the mounting arrangement, not just on outside dimensions. That is why a request to copy the original mounting should be kept separate from a proposal to change it. A simple sketch of the part order often tells us more than a set of photos that do not show where each component goes.

What to send along with the part number

Send the legible designation, the quantity, the application and photos of the marked faces. Measure the bore, outside diameter and width, and if the bearing has come apart, say which component each measurement belongs to. When you ask about a pair, add the parts drawing or a view of the shaft. Keep the original markings even if the machine has been repaired before: compare the number on a box from the storeroom with the marking on the installed part instead of assuming they match.

Can I drop one half of a part number that has a slash?

No. Keep both groups: the slash and what follows it are part of the designation that identifies the bearing in the catalog.

Does every bearing in a pair carry the same part number?

Not necessarily. Note the components at each position and the order they were assembled in before you send the request.

Is matching the diameters enough?

No. You also need the width, the full designation and the mounting arrangement. Check all of them before choosing a replacement.

SKF Tapered Roller Bearings

Tapered roller bearings from SKF are designed with truncated cone-shaped rolling elements and raceways, enabling them to handle both radial and axial loads in one direction. They must always be installed in pairs facing each other or against another bearing, as a single bearing cannot support the shaft without opposing thrust.

SKF Tapered Roller Bearings 33010/Q, 33111/Q

SKF tapered roller bearings are engineered to carry radial and axial loads at the same time. The cone and cup design creates linear contact that spreads stress across the raceway, which suits demanding operating conditions. MR Industrial Accessories LLC supplies these bearings as part of its bearing line for customers in the United States and Latin America.

SKF 302 Series Tapered Roller Bearings VA983

For equipment that handles both radial and axial forces in one direction, SKF 302 series tapered roller bearings are a common choice. Their tapered design creates linear contact that distributes load across the raceway. The VA983 suffix marks a special execution, often tied to tighter tolerances, controlled internal clearance or a specific heat treatment. MR Industrial Accessories supplies these bearings to customers across the United States and Latin America, and our team can help you confirm the right part.
