SKF cylindrical roller bearings: reading the part number

Cylindrical roller bearings are the SKF line for positions that carry radial load, a separate group from tapered and spherical roller bearings. Inside the line, the prefix of the designation tells one construction from another. Start any request with the full part number, letters ahead of the number included: knowing it is a cylindrical roller bearing does not tell you which one the arrangement needs.

Start with the prefix

Look at NU 202 ECP, NU 203 ECP and NU 204 ECP: the NU prefix and the ECP suffix stay the same while the number changes. They share one designation structure, but each number is its own part number. Keep it exactly as marked when you record the replacement, even if two bearings look alike.

NJ 205 ECP carries a different prefix. Don't strip a part number down to its digits, and don't drop the NU or NJ when you write up the request. The SKF guide treats these as different constructions and points out that the NU series allows axial displacement. Keep the suffix after the number too; knowing the prefix is no reason to guess at an ending you can't read.

Motors, generators and calenders

SKF's application guide links cylindrical roller bearings to motors and generators, and to calenders in plastics processing. On these machines, pin down which shaft position the bearing comes from and how it relates to the rest of the assembly. The two ends of one machine can use different constructions, so check the parts drawing before you carry a part number from one end to the other.

If the bearing came out in separate pieces, keep those pieces together and note where they were. A photo of the shaft and housing shows us how the assembly was mounted. The machine name points the search in the right direction, but it does not replace the details of the part you pulled from that position.

Note the position before you compare part numbers

For a quote, send every letter and number of the designation, the quantity, and the bore, outside diameter and width. Tell us the application, the shaft and which end of the machine it is on. Clear photos of the markings let us tell a partly worn prefix from a different one. If there is an angle ring or another mounting part, write its part number on a separate line. Being clear about which component you need lets us check the bearing and its accessories without mixing up their part numbers.

Can I order with just the numbers?

Send the prefix and the suffix as well. NU and NJ are part of what identifies the construction.

Does NU tell you the full execution?

Only part of it. The complete part number also needs the number and the blocks that come with it.

The rings came apart when I removed the bearing. What now?

Keep the pieces from each position labeled and photograph the markings, without mixing them with parts from other positions.

Key series

SKF NU..ECP Cylindrical Roller Bearings

The SKF NU..ECP line covers single-row cylindrical roller bearings built for substantial radial loads and elevated speeds. Rollers make line contact with the raceways, spreading the load across a wider area, which supports high capacity and stiffness. Typical installations include industrial machinery, electric motors and power transmission equipment.

Example part numbers:NU 202 ECPNU 203 ECPNU 204 ECPNU 205 ECPNU 206 ECP

SKF NU Cylindrical Roller Bearings ECP/C3

The SKF NU series covers cylindrical roller bearings built to carry heavy radial loads at considerable speed. Cylindrical rollers running in a polyamide cage keep operation precise and dependable in tough industrial service. Machine tools, gearboxes, pumps and power transmission equipment are typical homes for these bearings, where radial capacity and rigidity matter most.

SKF NJ Cylindrical Roller Bearings

SKF NJ series cylindrical roller bearings are built to carry heavy radial loads at considerable speed. The cylindrical roller and polyamide cage design supports precise, durable operation in demanding industrial equipment. MR Industrial Accessories supplies this line to customers across the United States and in several Latin American countries.
