SKF spherical roller thrust bearings, 292 to 294 series

SKF spherical roller thrust bearings are the answer when axial loads are very heavy and the shaft is also not perfectly aligned with its support. Asymmetrical rollers sit at an angle on a spherical raceway, which lets the bearing follow shaft deflection and carry some radial load as well. You find them on heavy vertical shafts, extruders, large gearboxes and propellers.

The 292, 293 and 294 series

The first three digits give the series. 29230 E is in the 292 series, the lightest, while 29317 E is in the 293 series, which has a larger cross-section for the same bore. The 294 series is the heaviest. The last two digits are the bore size, as on other bearings, and any letters after them mark the version: 29248 has none and 29476 EM has two.

With the bore unchanged, a different series means a different outside diameter and height. The shaft diameter alone is therefore not enough to order one. You need the complete designation, which is usually engraved on the face of one of the washers.

Load, lubrication and installation

The bearing takes axial load in one direction only. Where the thrust can reverse, the machine uses two bearings facing each other or a second bearing on the opposite side. It also needs a minimum axial load at all times: without load and at high speed the rollers tend to lift from the raceway, which is why many arrangements include preload springs.

The roller shape causes sliding against the guide flange, so oil lubrication is the usual choice. If grease is used, make sure it actually reaches that contact. The bearing separates into the shaft washer with rollers and cage, and the housing washer. When you take one apart, keep the parts of each set together.

What to send for a quote

Send the full designation and the quantity. If there is no code, measure the bore, the outside diameter and the overall height of the assembled bearing. Tell us the machine, whether the shaft is vertical or horizontal, the speed and whether it runs on oil or grease. If the old bearing failed, describe what the rollers and flange looked like; that helps us review the minimum load and the lubricant.

Can it carry radial load?

Some, provided the axial load is the main one. Mostly radial loads call for a different bearing.

Will one bearing handle thrust in both directions?

No. It works in one direction; thrust both ways needs two bearings.

Can 29230 and 29330 be interchanged?

No. The bore is the same, but the outside diameter and height are not.

Key series

SKF 29230 E, 29236 E, 29412 E Thrust Bearings

SKF spherical roller thrust bearings are built to carry very high axial loads while permitting slight angular misalignment between shaft and housing. They suit applications where axial forces dominate and alignment is not perfect. MR Industrial Accessories LLC supplies this line to customers across the United States, Canada, Mexico and South America.

SKF Spherical Roller Thrust Bearings

When a shaft carries a heavy axial load and perfect alignment is not realistic, SKF spherical roller thrust bearings are a common choice. Their spherical rolling elements let the bearing tolerate some angular offset between shaft and housing while still carrying the thrust. MR Industrial Accessories LLC supplies this line and helps you match the part number to your application.

SKF Spherical Roller Thrust Bearings EM Series

SKF spherical roller thrust bearings handle heavy axial loads while permitting a degree of angular misalignment. The spherical roller and raceway geometry suits setups where the shaft flexes or where alignment between shaft and housing is not exact. They appear in heavy machinery, mining equipment and steelmaking operations, among other demanding environments.
