SKF IR and LR inner rings for needle roller bearings

An SKF inner ring is a separate raceway that mounts on the shaft. You pair it with a needle roller bearing that has no inner ring when the shaft is not hardened and ground, or when it is already worn. Once the ring is in place, the needles run on a hard surface held to precise size, and the shaft's only job is to support the ring.

Three dimensions in one designation

IR 12X15X16 gives, in order, the ring bore, its outside diameter and its width, in millimeters. The outside diameter is the link to the bearing: it has to equal the under-needle diameter of the bearing that rides on it. IR 7X10X10.5 shows that the width can include a decimal, which you must keep.

LR 15X18X12.5 comes from a different ring series that uses the same three-dimension format with a different finish. A letter block at the end, as in IR 40X50X20 IS1, indicates a specific execution. Several widths usually exist for one bore and outside diameter, so those two figures alone will not pin down the ring.

Choosing the ring from the bearing

Start with the bearing, then pick the ring. Identify the needle roller bearing first, with its under-needle diameter and width, and then look for a ring with that outside diameter and the same or a greater width. A ring wider than the bearing lets the shaft shift a little axially while the needles stay on the raceway.

The ring needs a tight fit on the shaft. If it spins, it wears the shaft and heats the assembly. When the shaft already shows marks from the old ring, measure it before you order, since the seat may need repair. Install the ring by pressing or heating it, never by hitting its edge.

Send the full designation and the quantity. If you do not have it, give us the designation of the needle roller bearing it runs with and the actual shaft diameter, and we can find the possible rings from there. With no part number at all, measure bore, outside diameter and width with a micrometer. Tell us if the shaft moves axially in service, which helps set the width.

Its outside diameter, which must equal the bearing's under-needle diameter.

Can IR and LR rings be interchanged?

They are designated the same way but are separate series. Stay with the one on your equipment or review the application.

Is a wider ring acceptable?

Yes, if space allows. It gives the shaft some axial movement relative to the bearing.
