SKF SONL split pillow block housings

SKF SONL housings are split housings built to run on oil rather than grease. They come in when speed or temperature exceed what grease can handle, as on large fans, high-speed shafts and hot equipment. Oil sits in a sump in the housing base, and a ring turning with the shaft carries it up to the bearing. The older SOFN series is part of the same line.

SONL, SOFN and the paired number

In SONL 217-517 and SONL 218-518, the letters give the series and the paired number lists the two bearing sizes one housing body takes. SOFN 224 BF is from the earlier series, with a different designation style, and its closing letters describe the assembly. Don't swap a housing from one series for the other without comparing base dimensions.

An added block, as in SONL 218-518 K7, marks a variant of the same size and must be copied. The designation covers the housing only; the bearing, sleeve, oil ring and seals each have their own part numbers.

How it differs from a grease-lubricated housing

An oil-lubricated housing has to sit level, with oil at the specified height. Too little oil and the ring cannot lift it; too much and the oil churns, heats up and escapes through the seals. The sight glass or level indicator belongs to the assembly and should be checked at every shutdown.

Seals are non-contact labyrinth seals, since the speed rules out rubbing lips. That means careful shaft installation and a setting free of direct splashing. If the equipment runs very hot, it may also have oil cooling; mention that in your request.

What to send for a SONL quote

Send the full housing designation and quantity, along with the bearing designation, shaft diameter, speed and operating temperature. Tell us whether the position is locating or non-locating, whether the shaft passes through or ends inside the housing, and which oil you use. With the machine stopped, a photo of the sight glass and one of the base help confirm the series.

Can I run a SONL housing on grease?

It is designed for oil. For grease, other housing series apply.

Can SONL and SOFN be swapped?

They are separate generations. Compare the base, center height and accessories before replacing one with the other.

Is the oil ring included in the designation?

No. The oil ring, bearing and seals are each ordered by their own part number.

SKF SONL Split Plummer Block Housing

The SKF SONL split plummer block housing is a two-piece mounting component designed to hold bearings with a tapered bore, including those in the 222, 223, or 230 series. It is used when the bearing cannot be slid onto the shaft from the end, as it can be assembled around the shaft and bearing already in position. MR Industrial Accessories supplies this SKF line and offers technical guidance to help you select the correct size.

SKF SOFN BF Split Plummer Block Housing

The SKF SOFN BF is a two-piece plummer block housing that supports a bearing on a transmission shaft. Because it separates into halves, the bearing can be serviced or replaced without pulling the shaft out of the assembly. This makes it a practical choice where space around the equipment is tight and the support has to stay rigid.

SKF SOFN BL Split Housing

The SKF SOFN BL is a split housing that mounts in two halves, simplifying installation and maintenance on rotating shafts. It is commonly used where access is limited or fast assembly is needed. MR Industrial Accessories supplies this line and helps you confirm the correct size for your equipment.
