SKF SNL split pillow block housings, series 2-3, 5-6, 30, 31 and 32

The body of an SKF SNL split pillow block housing comes apart so you can get at the bearing assembly inside. This page is about the housing only; the bearing, the sleeve and the seals each need to be identified on their own. SKF also offers SAF, SNH, SONL and FNL housings, and telling these lines apart takes the designation and the equipment arrangement, not just the way the housing looks from outside.

How to read an SNL designation

The letters at the start of SNL 205 name the housing line. In SNL 206-305, the numbers on both sides of the hyphen form one block, so copy it whole. Our catalog also has SNL 515-612 and SNL 516-613; those are part numbers for the housing itself, not for the bearing that sits inside it.

We group SKF SNL housings into three sets: the 2-3 series, running from SNL 205 to SNL 218; the 5-6 series, from SNL 505 to SNL 532; and the large housings of the 30, 31 and 32 series, for example SNL 3140.

Take the marking straight off the housing body and check it against the parts drawing. The hyphenated numbers are not a shaft size, and they are not a list of what comes with the housing. If you are rebuilding an existing assembly, the housing has to be matched with the bearing and accessories that are really installed. A photo of the cap helps us search, but it won't tell us every part inside.

Where the housing sits in the machine

Our SKF guide lists SNL housings for cement plants, next to bearings and mounting sleeves. For a shaft support like this, note the whole housing body, the mounting base and the shaft opening. Knowing where the housing sits in the machine gives us context that an order for a bare housing leaves out.

When you rebuild an assembly, say which part you are replacing: the housing, the bearing or the accessories. Listing each position on its own line keeps the order inside the scope of the repair and lets every designation be checked against the drawing. Calling it a split housing is not enough either, since other lines in the catalog split too.

Build the request part by part

Send us the SNL designation, the quantity and photos of the marking, the base and the assembly as installed. Give us the shaft diameter you measured and the bearing part number, plus the sleeve part number if there is a sleeve. For end covers or seals, include their part numbers or photos and say which end of the housing they go on. Add the mounting dimensions and the machine application, and keep what you read on the physical part apart from what you took from a drawing.

Does an SNL part number cover the bearing too?

No, it covers the housing. If you need the full assembly, list the bearing and accessories as separate items.

Is the shaft diameter enough to switch from SNL to SAF?

No. Compare the housing, the way it bolts down and the mounting components before moving to another line.

The marking can't be read. What photos should I send?

One of the whole housing, one of the base and one of the shaft opening. Add your measurements and the bearing part number if you can read it.

SKF SNL Split Plummer Block Housings

For shaft support where full disassembly is not practical, the SKF SNL split plummer block housing offers a practical solution. The housing is split horizontally into two or three sections, allowing it to be placed around a spherical roller bearing and removed without pulling the entire shaft. This design is especially useful on long or heavy shafts where complete removal is difficult or impossible.

SKF SNL Split Plummer Block Housing

For maintenance teams looking to simplify bearing installation and inspection, the SKF SNL split plummer block housing offers a practical solution. Its two-piece cast iron construction allows the shaft to stay in place while the bearing is serviced, which saves time during planned shutdowns. The housing handles both radial and axial loads in rotating equipment, making it a common choice across many industrial settings.

SKF SNL Split Housing

The SKF SNL is a two-piece housing for mounting bearings on rotating shafts. Because it separates, you can service the bearing without pulling the shaft out, which saves time on conveyors, fans, mixers and other driven equipment. MR supplies this line and assists with selection.
