Spherical roller thrust bearings

A spherical roller thrust bearing carries heavy axial load in one direction, along with some radial load, and it self-aligns. Its asymmetrical rollers run on a spherical raceway, which takes up misalignment between shaft and housing. They show up in heavy machinery, hoisting equipment, cranes, presses, mills, high-power gearboxes and in steel and cement plants.

Most parts belong to the 292, 293 or 294 series, which differ in the ratio between outside diameter and height. Read the size code from the last two digits and multiply by 5 for the bore in millimeters: in FAG 29230-E1-MB, size 30 gives 150 mm; in SKF 29416 E/L5DA, 16 gives 80 mm. Large sizes put the bore after a slash, so 292/1000-E1-MB has a 1000 mm bore. The E and E1 suffixes mark a reinforced design, and MB a solid brass cage.

Selection starts with axial load, speed and temperature, then the lubrication method, which is nearly always oil. Because the bearing takes thrust in one direction only, pair it with a second bearing whenever the load can reverse. Respect the minimum load as well, so the rollers don't skid.
