Hydraulic nuts

A hydraulic nut is a tool for mounting and removing tapered bore bearings, whether they sit on a tapered shaft seat or on an adapter or withdrawal sleeve. Oil pressure drives an annular piston, giving a smooth, controlled axial push and avoiding the hammer blows and spot heating that damage raceways and rings.

All three brands here use the HMV designation: HMV10E, HMV11E and HMV12E from BGL, HMV-10, HMV-12 and HMV-13 from Timken, and HMV 10E, HMV 11E and HMV 106E from SKF. The number is a size code tied to the thread, not the shaft diameter, and the E marks the design. Special versions also exist, such as HMV 10/233983, and those are ordered by full part number.

To pick the right nut, define the shaft or sleeve thread (diameter and pitch), the bearing to be mounted, the clearance for the piston and the oil pump connection. They are used on rolling mills, grinding mills, presses, large gearboxes, turbines and mining and cement equipment, where the fit is critical and access is hard.
