An adapter sleeve lets you fit a tapered bore bearing, such as a spherical roller bearing or a Y-bearing, onto a plain shaft that has no machined shoulder. The sleeve is slotted and tapered: tightening the nut drives the bearing up the taper and clamps the sleeve onto the shaft. It comes as a set with the lock nut and lock washer, and it is common on belt and chain drives, conveyors, fans, pumps and process equipment.
H is the series you will see most, in part numbers such as H204, H 205 and H2321. The number is a size code rather than the shaft diameter: multiply the last two digits by 5 to get the bearing bore in millimeters, so size 08 in H208 means a bearing with a 40 mm bore. Digits in front of those give the bearing's dimension series, as in H2321 or H3122. Brands write the part number their own way; NTN and NSK, for instance, add suffix letters, as in H 319X or H 205X.
To pick the sleeve, you need the bearing designation and the shaft diameter. Length, taper and thread change from one series to the next, so the sleeve is matched to the bearing designation, never to the shaft size alone. Mounting is checked by how much the radial internal clearance drops or by the axial drive-up of the nut.
