When a bearing with a tapered bore needs to sit on a plain shaft that has no machined shoulder, an adapter sleeve does the job. It slides along the shaft to the working position and is locked in place with a nut, so the bearing can be set exactly where it is needed. SKF H series sleeves cover this mounting method for 22 series spherical roller bearings and self-aligning ball bearings.
The H series size number ties directly to the bearing and shaft size it fits. Each sleeve is used with a KM series lock nut and an MB series lock washer. If you do not already have those two parts, order them at the same time as the sleeve to avoid a second trip to the shaft.
These sleeves are common in conveyors, fans, pumps and long shafts where cutting a shoulder is not practical. Instead of butting the bearing against a fixed stop, you slide the sleeve along the plain shaft to its final position. That makes installation and axial adjustment simpler on equipment where the bearing location is not fixed by the housing.
Tightening the nut on the tapered sleeve follows the manufacturer's procedure. In most cases it means controlling how much the bearing internal clearance is reduced as the nut is turned. Too little tightening leaves the bearing loose on the shaft. Too much removes the internal clearance and leads to early failure from overload.
Metric adapter sleeves are fairly standardized by size across bearing manufacturers. An SKF H series sleeve usually has an equivalent in the same size from other brands, which helps when you are matching a replacement to an existing shaft and bearing number.
Send the shaft diameter or the bearing number you plan to mount. We will confirm the matching sleeve, nut and washer and quote the set. MR Industrial Accessories LLC supplies these sleeves to customers across the United States and in several Latin American countries, with quotes handled by WhatsApp or email.

Frequently asked questions
- What is an adapter sleeve used for?
- It mounts a bearing with a tapered bore on a plain shaft that has no machined shoulder. The nut adjusts the bearing position and internal clearance.
- Does the sleeve come with the nut and washer?
- No. The KM series lock nut and MB series lock washer are ordered separately and must match the sleeve size. We confirm all three part numbers together.
- How do I choose the right sleeve size?
- Use the shaft diameter or the bearing number you are mounting. The bearing number defines the tapered bore size, which sets the sleeve size.
