Slewing rings

A slewing ring is a large-diameter bearing that connects two structures and lets one turn against the other while it carries axial load, radial load and tilting moment at the same time. Gear teeth can be cut into the outer or the inner ring so a pinion drives it, or the ring can be ungeared. Cranes, excavators, aerial work platforms, turntables, antennas and mining and construction equipment all rely on them.

TECMA DRIVE part numbers read in blocks separated by periods: E.505.20.00.B, I.505.20.00.C or SD.616.14.00.B.R-ZT. The leading letter gives the gearing: E for external, I for internal, SD for no teeth. Across the B, C and R-ZT series, the second numeric block is the ball or roller diameter in millimeters: 20 for the light series, 25 or 32 for other ball series and 14 for crossed rollers. The ending defines the build: B for solid rings, C for flanged, B.R-ZT for crossed rollers, and D plus a number for special versions. Two rings that differ only in that ending will not interchange, so always ask for the complete part number.

Selection starts with the loads (axial, radial and tilting moment) under both normal duty and peak load. Those figures set the construction type and the diameter. Next come gear type (external, internal or none), rotational accuracy, clearance and mounting. The ring needs flat, rigid support surfaces and high-strength bolts tightened to the specified torque. Lubrication and sealing are chosen for the working environment.
