SKF PCM and PWM friction bushings

SKF friction bushings are plain bearings that work by sliding, with no rolling elements. They need very little radial space and are a good fit for joints, pivots and guides with slow or oscillating motion, heavy loads and little or no lubrication. The range covers cylindrical bushings, flanged bushings and thrust washers, in more than one material.

Shape, size and material in one code

In PCM 050705 E the letters identify a cylindrical bushing, and the six digits, read in pairs, give the bore, the outside diameter and the length in millimeters. PCMF 060804 E adds an F for the flanged version. PCMW 122401.5 E is a thrust washer, where the digits give bore, outside diameter and thickness.

The last letter tells you the sliding layer material: PCM 081012 M and a PCM ending in E share the same shape but are not equivalent. PWM 202415 is a different bushing family with a thicker wall, still with three dimensions in its six digits. Whatever the code, copy the letters along with the numbers.

The shaft and the housing finish the job

A thin-wall bushing takes its final shape when it is pressed into the housing, so the housing bore and the shaft have to be within the manufacturer's tolerance; together they set the running clearance. Shaft finish matters too, because a rough shaft wears through the sliding layer quickly.

These bushings handle heavy loads at low speed and back-and-forth motion, conditions that would mark a rolling bearing. They are not meant for continuous high-speed rotation. Lubrication also varies by material: some run dry, others need grease at assembly or regreasing in service, so stay with the material from the original design.

What to send for a bushing quote

Send the full designation and the quantity. If there is no code, measure the shaft diameter, the housing diameter and the bushing length, and say whether it has a flange. Tell us the type of motion, the approximate load, whether the point is greased and its temperature. A photo of the removed bushing shows what the inner layer is made of.

Is a PCM ending in E the same as one ending in M?

Same shape, different sliding material. Use the one that is on the equipment.

Can it replace a bronze bushing?

Yes, when the dimensions match and the application allows it. Check load, speed and lubrication first.

Should it be driven in with a hammer?

No. Press it in with a mandrel that bears evenly, without hitting the edge.

Key series

SKF PTB Friction Bushings

SKF PTB series friction bushings sit between a shaft and a housing to cut friction and wear. They handle radial loads in rotating or oscillating motion and can run self-lubricated or with lubrication. Industrial and automotive equipment that needs a compact, low-maintenance solution is where they fit best. MR supplies this line alongside its power transmission and support components.

SKF PCM E Plain Bearings

SKF PCM E series plain bearings are thin-walled bushings with a sliding coating, built for radial loads in oscillating or limited-rotation movements. They suit joints, pivots and guides where friction must stay low and maintenance kept to a minimum. MR Industrial Accessories LLC supplies this line within its range of power transmission and motion components.

SKF PCM M Plain Bearings

SKF PCM M plain bearings are thin-walled, self-lubricating bushings. A steel backing supports a sintered bronze layer, topped with a PTFE and lead mixture. They handle radial loads in oscillating, rotating or sliding movements where a continuous lubricant supply is not practical. Their slim profile fits tight spaces and lets them replace solid bushings that have lower load capacity.
