SKF lock washers and locking clips: MB, W and MS

An SKF lock washer keeps a lock nut from backing off. Its inner tang engages the keyway in the shaft or the slot in the sleeve, and its outer tabs bend into a slot on the nut. It is a small part, but it determines whether the bearing holds its position. Every washer series pairs with one nut series, and the number ties them together.

Matching each washer to its nut

MB 4 is the washer for a KM 4 nut, with the same number and a metric thread. MBL 24 does that job for the low-profile KML nuts. W 03 fits the inch-thread N series nuts. An MB washer cannot replace a W with the same number, since its bore and tang are made for a different thread.

MS 3044 is a locking clip, not a washer: it bolts to the nut and engages a slot, and it is used on large HM series nuts. Identify it by the full part number and by the nut it goes with. A letter at the end of a designation marks another variant of the same size.

When to replace it

The tabs get bent to lock the nut and straightened to remove it. After a few rounds the metal fatigues, and a tab can break off in service. That is why standard practice is a new washer every time the nut comes off, even when the old one looks fine.

Check the inner tang too. If it is marked or twisted, the nut has been trying to turn, and you should inspect the fit and the keyway. On an adapter sleeve the washer is part of the set; when you order it alone, you need to know which sleeve or nut it goes with.

What we need to quote it

Send the washer designation and quantity. If it is unreadable, the designation of the nut or sleeve it works with is enough to identify it. Without either, measure the inside diameter, outside diameter and thickness, and count the tabs. Telling us whether the shaft thread is metric or inch prevents mixing up the series.

Can I reuse a lock washer?

We don't recommend it. Bending fatigues the tabs, so fit a new washer at every assembly.

Which washer goes with a KM 4 nut?

The MB 4. KM nuts and MB washers share the same number.

Can MB and W washers be swapped?

No. They are made for different threads, metric and inch.

Key series

SKF MB Series Lock Washer

The SKF MB series lock washer is a key component in bearing mounting systems. It works with a slotted lock nut to hold bearings and other parts firmly on threaded shafts. An inner tab engages a groove on the shaft, while outer tabs are bent into notches on the nut, creating a mechanical lock that resists vibration and rotation. MR Industrial Accessories supplies this series as part of its range of bearing accessories.

SKF Lock Washer W Series Bearing Locking

A SKF lock washer from the W series sits between the bearing lock nut and the bearing, holding the nut at the position you set. Two tabs do the work: the inner one locates in the shaft groove, the outer one folds over a nut face. Assemblies on shafts where a nut working loose would be a problem are where these washers belong.

SKF MS Lock Clips for Lock Nuts

SKF MS lock clips are locking elements for lock nuts, secured with a screw. Each clip is identified by its full designation and by the lock nut it fits.
