SKF hydraulic seals: profiles, sizes and part numbers

SKF hydraulic seals are made for cylinders. They hold pressurized oil between piston and bore or between rod and head, and keep dirt out. They are not meant for rotating shafts. One cylinder uses several seals with different jobs (piston seal, rod seal, wiper and guide rings), and this catalog line brings all of those profiles together.

Profile and dimensions

The leading letters name the seal profile and, through it, its role in the cylinder. CUT 50X39X4.2 and GH 25X17.5X3.2-AD1 are two different profiles, each with three dimensions separated by X, while ZW 25X32 has two. The order of the diameters depends on the profile, so don't compare dimensions across families.

DTW-25X33X5-J2G shows its dimensions, and the ending identifies the material. DSW-625-J2G instead carries a number that is not a direct millimeter dimension. Either way, the ending belongs to the part number: one profile is made in compounds for different fluids and temperatures.

Look at the whole cylinder

When a cylinder leaks, the common approach is to replace the full set instead of one seal. They have all run the same hours, and taking the cylinder apart twice costs more than the parts. As you disassemble, note which groove each seal came from and which way its lip faced; a single-acting seal installed backward will not seal.

Check the rod and the bore as well. A lengthwise scratch, a dent or corrosion will cut a new seal within the first few cycles. Inspect the guide rings too: when they are worn, the rod runs at an angle and loads the seal on one side. Fluid and temperature determine the material, so it is worth keeping the same one.

What to send for a seal quote

Send the part number of each seal and the quantity. If you lack part numbers, give us the rod diameter, the bore diameter and each groove's bottom diameter, width and depth. Tell us the working pressure, fluid, temperature and whether the cylinder is single or double acting. A photo of the removed seals laid out in their installed order helps us recognize the profiles.

Can a shaft seal be used in a cylinder?

No. Radial shaft seals are not designed for hydraulic cylinder pressure.

Are dimensions enough?

We also need the profile and the material, since two seals with the same dimensions can do different jobs.

Should I replace one seal or the whole set?

Common practice is to replace the cylinder's complete set during the same shutdown.

Key series

SKF DTW-J2G Hydraulic Rod Seals

The DTW-J2G line from SKF covers lip seals built for hydraulic cylinder rods. Their job is to hold pressurized fluid on one side and keep dirt, water and other contaminants out, which protects the rest of the system and keeps it running efficiently. You will find them on mobile equipment, presses, construction machines and industrial circuits that run on mineral oil or hydraulic fluid. MR Industrial Accessories supplies them as part of its sealing range.

SKF DSW Hydraulic Seals DSW-625-J2G

SKF DSW hydraulic seals serve as rod sealing elements in hydraulic cylinders. Each seal combines a lip that retains oil with a wiper edge that blocks dust, water and other contaminants from entering the system. Typical installations include mobile machinery, presses, construction equipment and industrial hydraulic circuits. MR Industrial Accessories LLC supplies this line and assists with size and compound selection.

SKF G Series Hydraulic Seals – G 8X12X3 to G 20X28X4

SKF G series hydraulic seals are components used to keep oil or grease contained in hydraulic and pneumatic assemblies. They are made from high-resistance elastomers and fit into cylindrical housings to control leaks and block contaminants. MR Industrial Accessories LLC supplies this line for upkeep of cylinders, pumps and valves, serving customers throughout the United States and in several Latin American countries.
