SKF linear motion: ball bearings, units and shaft blocks

SKF's linear motion line has the parts that let a component travel along a round guide shaft: linear ball bearings, units with the bearing already fitted in a housing, and the blocks that hold the shaft. You find them on carriages, tables, cutting devices and packaging machines. These are straight-line systems: the bearing slides along the shaft instead of turning.

Bearing, unit or shaft block

In nearly every part number, the number is the guide shaft diameter in millimeters. LBBR 12-2LS/HV6 is a compact linear ball bearing for a 12 shaft, with suffixes that describe its seals and execution. LUHR 12-2LS is a unit, meaning the same kind of bearing already mounted in a housing with bolt holes.

LTDR 12-2LS is a different style of unit for the same shaft, while LSCS 12 is no bearing at all but a block that supports the end of the guide shaft. LPAR 12 comes from yet another family of components for that diameter. A complete guide needs parts of more than one type, all for the same diameter, and you order each one by its designation.

The shaft works as part of the bearing

The balls of a linear bearing run straight on the shaft, so the shaft has to be a hardened and ground precision shaft; on plain bar stock the balls cut grooves and the motion starts to stick. If a carriage feels stiff or has play, inspect the shaft before you replace only the bearing.

A linear ball bearing takes load at right angles to the shaft, not rotation or heavy moments. That is why carriages run on two shafts with four supports, or on tandem units. Parallelism between the two shafts has the biggest effect on smooth travel: if they are out of parallel, the bearings bind over part of the stroke. Seals matter wherever there is dust or chips.

What to send for a guide quote

Send the full designations and how many of each part you need. If there is no part number, give us the guide shaft diameter, the bearing outside diameter and length, and whether it is a loose bearing or a unit with its housing. Include the travel length, the load, the operating environment and whether you also need the shaft or its blocks. A photo of the assembled carriage shows us the layout.

Does the number give the shaft diameter?

In these series it does, in millimeters. Measure the guide shaft to confirm.

Can I use plain steel bar for the shaft?

We advise against it. The balls need a hardened, ground shaft.

Should I order a unit or a loose bearing?

A unit includes its housing and bolts in place; a loose bearing fits into a housing that is part of the machine.

SKF LPAR Series Linear Units

SKF LPAR series linear units combine a carriage and rail into one assembly for accurate, repeatable linear motion. They suit machine axes, gantries and positioning systems that need stiffness with low friction. MR Industrial Accessories LLC supplies this line and provides technical guidance to match the unit size to the load and travel of each application.

SKF LSCS Linear Units

For linear motion that demands rigidity and repeatability, the SKF LSCS series pairs a bearing-equipped carriage with a profile rail. These units suit machine tools, automation systems, and handling equipment where smooth, accurate travel is essential. MR supplies this line and can help you match the right size to your design.
