SKF Y-bearing units: SY, FY and UC series part numbers

An SKF Y-bearing unit arrives ready to install: an insert bearing already seated in a housing of cast iron or pressed steel. You bolt it to the frame, slide the shaft through and lock the insert. Besides SKF's own SY and FY series, the catalog also lists UCP and UCF units. Keep in mind that the unit's part number covers the housing style and size, while the insert inside carries its own designation.

Reading the housing style from the prefix

The leading letters describe how the unit mounts. SY 1.1/2 TF is a pillow block and FY 1.1/2 TF is a square flange unit; both fit the same shaft. In these two series the number gives the shaft diameter directly: written with a point and a fraction for inch shafts, as in those two, and as a whole number for metric shafts, as in SY 25 TF. The letters at the end identify the insert fitted to the unit, so copy them as they appear.

UCP 205 and UCF 205 follow different logic. P still means pillow block and F flange, but 205 is a size within the series rather than a shaft dimension, so comparing numbers across families tells you nothing. A slash followed by letters at the end marks a variant of the same unit and belongs to the part number.

On our site, SKF Y-bearing units are sorted by housing type. Pillow blocks: SY plus the SYJ, SYR, SYNT, SYF and SYWK variants. Flanged units: FY, FYJ, FYC and FYTB. Take-up units: TU.

Replace the unit or only the insert?

Often the insert is what failed and the housing is fine. When the spherical seat has no play and no marks, you can swap just the Y-bearing, which we list as a separate line. Replace the complete unit if the housing is cracked, if the insert has spun in its seat or if the base was bent by bolting it down on an uneven surface.

A replacement drops into the old position only when three dimensions agree: shaft center height above the base, spacing between the mounting holes and bolt size. Units from different series can share a shaft size and still differ on those three.

What to send for a quote

Give us the full housing designation and, if it is legible, the insert designation too. When the casting is worn or painted over, measure the shaft, the center height and the hole spacing, and send a front photo plus one of the base. Let us know whether the shaft is metric or inch and how the insert locks: set screws or a collar you turn to tighten. Add the quantity and where the unit sits on the machine.

Is an SY interchangeable with a UCP since both are pillow blocks?

No, they belong to different series. Check center height and mounting holes before swapping one for the other.

Does the number always give the shaft diameter?

For SY and FY, yes. For UCP and UCF it is a series size, so measure the shaft to confirm.

Can I buy just the insert bearing?

Yes. Order it by its own designation from the SKF Y-bearing line.

Key series

SKF SY Bearing Housing with Insert Bearing

The SKF SY bearing housing with insert bearing is a ready-to-mount unit that pairs a cast iron housing with a Y-series insert bearing. It supports rotating shafts in power transmission equipment where simple installation and self-alignment are important. MR Industrial Accessories supplies this line for industrial applications across the United States and Latin America.

Example part numbers:SY 1. TFSY 1.1/2 TFSY 1.1/4 TFSY 1.3/4 TFSY 1.3/16 TF

SKF FY . TF Y-Bearing Housed Unit

The SKF FY . TF is a housed unit that pairs a split housing with a Y-series insert bearing. It arrives pre-assembled and lubricated, ready to support rotating shafts in industrial machinery. For plant maintenance and purchasing teams, it offers a straightforward way to mount shafts without dismantling surrounding components.

Example part numbers:FY 1. TFFY 1.1/2 TFFY 1.1/4 TFFY 1.3/4 TFFY 1.3/16 TF

SKF UCP Y-Bearing Housing with Insert Bearing

A UCP unit from SKF pairs a cast iron housing that bolts down flat with an insert bearing whose spherical outer ring lets the shaft settle into alignment on its own. Two mounting holes in the base hold the assembly to welded or bolted steelwork, and small errors during installation are absorbed rather than transferred to the shaft. Belt, chain and coupling drives on industrial machinery are the usual places these units turn up.
