Toroidal roller bearings

A toroidal roller bearing is a single-row radial bearing with long, slightly crowned rollers running in concave raceways. That shape gives it the load capacity of a cylindrical roller bearing and the misalignment tolerance of a spherical roller bearing, and it also lets the inner ring shift axially against the outer ring with little friction. That makes it the bearing for the non-locating, expanding end of the shaft in fans, conveyor belts, paper machine dryers, mills and gearboxes.

FAG part numbers in this line follow the pattern C2218-XL-K-M. C marks the toroidal type, the numeric block gives series and size, and the last two digits give the bore: 18 × 5 = 90 mm. Suffixes describe the design: XL is FAG's higher-capacity version, K means a tapered bore and M a solid brass cage. So C2218-XL-K-M and C2218-XL-M share a size and differ only in the bore, tapered on the first and cylindrical on the second; the same goes for C2220-XL-K-M and C2220-XL-M.

With a tapered bore, the bearing can go on an adapter sleeve or a withdrawal sleeve. When selecting, weigh radial load, speed, misalignment and axial movement against the application, and make sure the arrangement lets it work as the non-locating bearing: the outer ring has to be free to move in the housing, while a bearing at the opposite end locates the shaft.
