A lock washer sits between the bearing and the lock nut and keeps vibration from backing the nut off. An inner tab engages a groove in the shaft or sleeve, and one of the outer tabs is bent into a slot in the nut. It always goes with a precision lock nut and is sized to that nut, not to the shaft.
The part number is a size code that identifies the nut thread and the washer dimensions, not the shaft diameter. Each washer pairs with the nut of the same number in its series, for example MB 10 with an SKF KM 10 nut. BGL, SKF, FAG and TIMKEN use the same MB size numbers: MB0, MB1, MB 10, MB30. NTN uses its AWL24, AWL26 and AWL28 series, and some variants carry a trailing X.
You'll find them on the shafts of gearboxes, fans, pumps, conveyor rollers and other rotating equipment exposed to vibration. Fit a new washer whenever the arrangement is taken apart: a tab that has been bent once can snap when bent again.
