The DBH 9709 is a radial shaft seal of the lip type. Its job is to keep oil, grease or water from escaping along a rotating shaft and to keep dust and particles out. It sits press-fitted in the housing and its lip runs against the shaft, so that surface needs to be ground and free of marks. Like any seal, it wears: once lubricant starts leaking or the lip stiffens, it is time to replace it.
