The DBH 5209 is a radial shaft seal that keeps oil or grease contained where a rotating shaft passes through a housing. Its designation gives the three key measurements: shaft 42.00 mm, housing 56.00 mm and height 8.00 mm, and it follows design A 136. The outer body is pressed into the housing while the lip rides against the shaft. As a wear part, it eventually lets lubricant escape, which is the signal to plan a replacement.

This seal is a single-lip radial shaft seal. The 42.00 mm figure refers to the shaft diameter (d), the 56.00 mm figure to the housing bore (D) and the 8.00 mm figure to the height (h). Design A 136 describes how the lip and the metal case are shaped. The elastomer lip does the sealing work, and an internal spring keeps it pressed against the shaft. The case holds the seal firmly in the housing.

Inspect the shaft as well: wear, scoring or a visible track under the lip will prevent a proper seal, so repair the shaft or fit a wear sleeve. Install the new seal with the lip lubricated using the same oil or grease as the application, keep it square to the shaft, and apply force only to the outer ring, never to the lip. Remove any burrs from the housing first.
