When a gearbox, pump or electric motor starts weeping oil around the shaft, the usual suspect is the radial shaft seal. The DBH 5085Sil is a single-lip seal with an Lz design, meaning the lip is backed by a spring that keeps steady pressure against the shaft. Its 17 mm shaft, 28 mm housing and 7 mm height make it a compact option for smaller transmission equipment.

Reading the size is straightforward: 17 mm is the shaft diameter the lip rides on, 28 mm is the bore in the housing, and 7.00 mm is the overall height. The Lz designation tells you the lip works together with a steel spring, so contact is maintained even when there is slight misalignment or vibration. The outer shell is elastomer, which suits machined metal housings held to H8 tolerance or similar. If your equipment already uses this standard size, the 5085Sil drops in as a direct replacement.

You will find this seal in gearboxes, centrifugal pumps, electric motors, compressors and conveyor rollers, as well as machine tools and chain- or belt-driven equipment where oil has to stay in and bearings have to stay protected. Because of its compact dimensions, it shows up often in single-phase motors, worm gear reducers and low-power pumps. In dirty or wet environments, check that the lip and seal material can handle that exposure before you install it.

Installation calls for a clean housing and shaft, no burrs or scratches that could nick the lip, and a light coat of the same oil or grease used in the equipment. Press the seal in with a press or a support tube — never hammer on the lip. Shaft runout needs to stay within the limits allowed for radial shaft seals; if the shaft is worn where the lip contacts it, a repair sleeve or a different size may be the better route. Speed, temperature and the fluid being retained all factor into the final selection.
