SKF V-belts: section and length

SKF V-belts use the PHG prefix, the same one the brand puts on its other belts. The part that matters comes after it: the section of the profile and a number for the length. The line includes classical, narrow and cogged sections, and each one has its own way of stating length. Read both parts correctly and you avoid a belt that seats in the sheave but turns out too long or too short.

Section and length inside a PHG part number

In PHG B24 and PHG C40, the letter is the classical section and the number is the nominal length in that standard. PHG SPB1250 is a narrow section whose number is the length in millimeters. PHG 3V250 comes from a different narrow family with a scale of its own. Don't compare numbers between families: there is no simple conversion that turns a 250 in one into a 1250 in another.

An X right after the section means a cogged belt with the same profile, and a closing block of letters points to a specific construction. Both belong in the part number. When the old belt has lost its marking, identify the section by measuring the top width and the height, and get the length with a tape run around the sheaves.

The belt and its sheaves

A V-belt drives on the sides of the groove, not the bottom. If a new belt drops in until it bottoms out, the sheave is worn, and a new belt won't stop the slipping. Check the grooves with a gauge, or against a new belt, before you order.

On multi-belt drives, change every belt at once, all with the same part number. A new belt next to stretched ones ends up carrying the full load. Look at the tensioner travel as well: if it is already at its limit, the old belt has stretched and its length is not a reliable guide.

What to send for a belt quote

Send the full PHG part number and the number of belts on the drive. If it can't be read, give us the top width and height of the section, the outside length you measured, both sheave diameters and the center distance. That is enough to confirm the profile and the length. Telling us whether the original belt was cogged and how many grooves each sheave has saves a second round of questions.

Do B24 and SPB1250 use the same length scale?

No. Every section family has its own scale, so don't convert between them.

Can I change just one belt in a set?

Replace the whole set instead, using the same part number on every belt.

Can a cogged belt replace a plain one of the same section?

It fits the same groove, but it is a different part number. Check before you mix types on one drive.
