SKF PHS sprockets for roller chain

SKF roller chain sprockets use the PHS prefix. The part number tells you the chain it fits, the number of strands, the hub style and the tooth count. Because every combination gets its own part number, the line is very large, so have those four details clear before you start searching.

Chain size, strand count, hub style and tooth count

Take PHS 25-1B9: 25 is the chain size, 1 means a single strand, B is the sprocket style and 9 is the tooth count. PHS 25-1A18 fits the same chain, has 18 teeth and is style A, a plate with no hub. Style B has a hub on one side. Chain sizes with a B in them, such as PHS 05B-1B10, follow the European standard and will not mesh with American standard chain.

In PHS 06B-1TB26 the style is replaced by TB, meaning the sprocket takes a taper bushing; the bushing is ordered separately and sets the bore. In PHS 10B-3C76, the 3 stands for three strands and the C for another hub style. Letters at the end, such as SS, mark a different execution of the same geometry.

Sprockets and chain wear as a pair

You can spot a worn sprocket by its thin, hooked teeth. A new chain on that sprocket will stretch in short order, and a new sprocket on a worn chain runs into the same problem. If the drive has a lot of hours on it, quote the whole set: both sprockets plus the chain.

Changing the tooth count changes the ratio, but it also changes the sprocket diameter and the chain length you need. Before ordering a sprocket with a different number of teeth, make sure it fits the available space and that the tensioner still has travel.

What to send for a sprocket quote

Send the full PHS part number and the quantity. If you don't have it, give us the chain pitch or chain designation, the number of strands and teeth, the shaft diameter and keyway, and the hub width and diameter. Tell us whether the sprocket takes a taper bushing, comes with a finished bore or is to be bored, which saves back and forth. A front photo and an edge photo are enough to identify the style.

Is the last number the diameter?

No, it is the tooth count. The diameter follows from the tooth count and the chain pitch.

What does TB stand for?

It means the sprocket mounts with a taper bushing. The bushing has its own part number, chosen for the shaft.

Will a 05B sprocket work with a 25 chain?

No. They come from different standards, and the pitch and width don't match.
