SKF PHP sheaves and timing pulleys

SKF sheaves and pulleys carry the PHP prefix and serve two kinds of drive: grooved sheaves for V-belts and toothed pulleys for timing belts. The part number tells you the groove or tooth count, the belt profile and how the part attaches to the shaft. Belts are covered on their own pages; this one is about identifying the sheave or pulley.

Groove count, profile and diameter

Take PHP 1SPA63TB: 1 is the groove count, SPA the belt profile and 63 the diameter in millimeters. PHP 3SPC150TB has three SPC grooves. PHP 1-B34TB and PHP 1-3V265TB follow the same order, but for those profiles the diameter is given on the scale of their own standard, not in millimeters.

The closing letters describe the mounting. TB means the sheave takes a taper bushing, ordered separately, and the bushing sets the bore. On timing pulleys such as PHP 20-8M-30TB, the first number is the tooth count, 8M is the pitch and 30 is the belt width it is built for.

The sheave and the drive around it

You replace a sheave either because the grooves are worn or because you want a different drive ratio. For worn grooves, the part number stays the same. For a new ratio, a different diameter changes machine speed, belt length and bearing load, so review both sheaves and the center distance before you decide.

Make sure the sheave and the belt have the same profile. A belt with a similar section can drop into the groove and still seat poorly. On timing pulleys, the pitch and tooth profile must match the belt exactly. Choose the taper bushing by the size the sheave calls for and by the shaft diameter.

Getting a sheave or pulley quoted

Send the full PHP part number and quantity. Without it, give us the belt profile, groove count, outside diameter, overall width and shaft diameter with keyway. For a timing pulley, the tooth count, pitch and belt width. Let us know whether the current part mounts with a taper bushing, a setscrew or a finished bore, and whether you need the bushing too.

Is the bushing included with a TB sheave?

No. The taper bushing has its own part number and is chosen for the shaft.

Can I run a belt of a different profile on the same sheave?

We don't recommend it. Each groove is cut for one profile, and a different section will seat poorly.

Is the number always the diameter in millimeters?

Yes for SPZ, SPA, SPB and SPC profiles. Other profiles use the scale of their own standard.
