SKF SAF split pillow block housings: designations

SKF SAF housings belong to the inch-dimension split housing series. Cap and base come apart, so you can install the bearing without pulling the shaft. They sit alongside the metric SNL housings in the catalog, and you should not substitute one for the other before checking the base and the center height. This page covers SAF housings and the FSAF, SAFS and SAFD variants.

Reading a SAF designation

In SAF 217 and SAF 220, the letters are the housing series and the digits relate to the bearing size the housing takes, not to the shaft diameter. That is how one housing body can serve different shafts, depending on the sleeve and seals installed. If a hyphen and another number follow, they describe a specific assembly and must be copied.

FSAF 218 and SAFS 520 are variants in the same family: change one letter and you have a different housing, even at the same bearing size. The housing designation leaves out the bearing, the sleeve and the seals; each has its own part number, and you need all of them to rebuild the assembly.

Checks before you replace a SAF housing

Measure the base: length, width, anchor hole spacing and bolt count. The same size comes in two-bolt and four-bolt versions, and a base that does not match means drilling the frame. Shaft center height above the base is the other dimension you cannot change without throwing off machine alignment.

Look at how the bearing is held in the housing as well. Along a shaft, one housing is set up as the locating position and the rest as non-locating, which comes down to whether locating rings are installed. If you find no rings during teardown, note it: nothing is missing, that housing is a non-locating position.

Quoting the housing or the complete assembly

Send the designation cast into the base, plus the cap designation if it is different, along with the quantity. Tell us whether you need the housing only or the assembly with bearing, sleeve and seals. Include the shaft diameter in inches or millimeters, the base dimensions and the center height. Say whether the position is locating or non-locating, and whether the shaft runs through the housing or ends inside it, since that determines the end cover.

Can I replace a SAF with an SNL on the same shaft?

Not without measuring. Base, bolt holes and center height are different.

Is the bearing included in the housing designation?

No. The bearing, sleeve and seals each have their own designation.

Can SAF and FSAF be swapped?

They are separate variants. Stay with the one on your equipment or compare dimensions first.

SKF SAF Split Plummer Block Housings

When your shaft diameter and load exceed what a standard SNL unit can handle, the SKF SAF split plummer block housing is the next step up. It is a cast iron housing, split at the cap, so you can install or replace it without pulling the whole shaft. Its base and cap are dimensioned with more margin than an SNL, which suits larger shafts and heavier duty.
