SKF housing accessories: TSN, FRB and ASNH

An SKF split pillow block housing comes as a base and a cap. Everything else is selected on its own, based on the shaft and the operating environment: seals for the shaft openings, rings that locate the bearing, and an end cover that closes the housing when the shaft stops inside it. Those parts are grouped in this line. They are small next to the full assembly, yet a housing with the wrong seal starts losing grease on day one.

Three accessory families

Seal designations combine the TSN prefix, the housing size and a final letter for the seal type, so TSN 206 A, TSN 208 S and TSN 205 G are three different sealing arrangements. The number has to match both the housing and the diameter of the shaft running through it, while the letter is chosen for speed, contamination and temperature.

FRB 3.5/52 is a locating ring. The first figure is the ring width and the second is its outside diameter, which equals the bearing outside diameter. These rings sit on either side of the bearing in the locating housing. ASNH 506-605 is the end cover that closes a housing of that size where the shaft does not pass through.

What goes in each position

A shaft that runs through the housing needs a seal on each side. A shaft that ends inside takes one seal plus an end cover. Locating rings, usually two, go in the locating housing on the shaft line; leave them out of the non-locating housing so the bearing can float.

How many rings and how wide depends on the bearing in that housing, because one housing body accepts bearings of different widths. That is why it makes sense to order the accessories along with the bearing and the adapter sleeve rather than separately later on.

What we need to quote the accessories

Send the housing designation, the bearing designation and the shaft diameter. Tell us whether the shaft runs through or ends inside, whether the housing is locating or non-locating, and what the environment is like: dust, water, temperature. Those details settle the seals, rings and cover. If you already have part numbers for the accessories, send them with the quantity for each.

Are seals included with the housing?

No. Seals are ordered on their own TSN designation, chosen for the shaft and the environment.

How many FRB rings go in a housing?

That depends on the bearing. They are fitted only in the locating housing; check the count and width against the bearing designation.

When do I need an ASNH end cover?

When the shaft ends inside the housing. The cover takes the place of the seal on that side.
