SKF FNL flanged housings

SKF FNL units are flanged housings that bolt to a wall or plate on the machine, with the shaft at right angles to that surface. They fit places with no horizontal base for a pillow block, such as a conveyor end or the side of a frame. Like split pillow block housings, they take tapered bore bearings mounted on an adapter sleeve.

Size and version

In FNL 505 A, the letters are the series and the number is the size, which relates to the bearing and sleeve the housing takes. The final letter sets the version: FNL 505 A and FNL 505 B share a size and differ in how the shaft side is closed. FNL 509 A is the first version in a larger size.

As with other housings, the code covers the housing only. The bearing, the sleeve with its nut and washer, and the locating rings each have their own designation, so ordering a complete assembly means listing every part.

The mounting surface

A flanged housing transfers load to the wall through its bolts and spigot. The surface has to be flat and square to the shaft. On a warped plate the housing sits at an angle and the bearing runs under strain, self-aligning or not. Check the plate stiffness as well, since thin sheet metal vibrates and works the bolts loose.

Before you replace one, measure the bolt circle, the number and diameter of the holes and the spigot diameter. Note whether the shaft runs through the housing or ends inside it, since that decides the version and the seal.

What we need to quote an FNL housing

Send the full designation, final letter included, and the quantity. Add the bearing and sleeve designations and the actual shaft diameter. Tell us whether the shaft runs through or ends inside, what the mounting surface is like and what the environment is. If the code is unreadable, the flange dimensions and a photo from the front are enough for us to identify it.

Can FNL 505 A and FNL 505 B be swapped?

Same size, different version. Pick the one that matches how the shaft ends.

Is the bearing included with the housing?

No. The bearing, sleeve and rings are ordered on their own designations.

Can a flanged housing replace a pillow block?

Only if the machine offers a flat, stiff wall square to the shaft to bolt it to.
